A little known gem of a detective film

Based on the novel by Friedrich Durrenmatt, "The Pledge" somehow went unnoticed in 2001 (maybe everyone was watching "Lord of the Rings"); I'm surprised it wasn't up for at least a few Oscars. Sean Penn did an EXCELLENT job of directing the film, bringing out superb dramatic performances by Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Vanessa Redgrave, and Sam Shepard, to name several. Jack Nicholson is at his peak in his role as a retired homicide detective--playing "a man obsessed"--in this suspense-filled psychological thriller and crime drama. I guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed by this film!
