Not As Engaging As I Remembered

(This is yet another series not available via Netflix...) I watched this series on PBS when it was first introduced in the US more than 20 years ago. Viewing it now, it comes across as a time capsule displaying highly questionable mores--and I don't mean the sexual orientation of the various characters--and therefore sets me to wondering, "What were we thinking?" Despite the stellar cast and setting, the mindset of late-1970s San Francisco presents itself as a mind-numbing, disorienting adolescent rebellion. Only one storyline holds up well: that of Mrs. Madrigal and Mr. Halcyon's romance. Everything else seems daft or mean-spirited.
