Thriller with a winding plot

Directed and starred in by a younger Clint Eastwood, 'Play Misty For Me' is a thriller with a shocking ending (well, shocking in the 1970's sense of the word), and a fairly complicated plot of a fan who doesn't understand boundaries. Clint is a disc jockey at a local radio station who is the victim of an out-of-control fan who can't take no for an answer. Jessica Walter is the fan, Donna Mills the love interest. The film certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the final scenes are scary enough for anyone's quota of thrills for the evening. A carp: The love scene two-thirds of the way in with a beautiful rendition by Roberta Flack of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', just doesn't work. It slows the film right down and adds little to the plot., as does the scene of a jazz festival which has little point also. But jazz is Clint Eastwood's love, so the magazines tell us, and maybe he edged this scene in for himself. But the film would have been tighter without it.
All in all a scary, proficient thriller with competent acting.
