In 1983 Italy, a 17-year-old boy (Timothee Chalamet) falls in love with a visiting American scholar (Armie Hammer) who has been hired as a research assistant by his father (Michael Stuhlbarg). Over the course of a memorable summer, the two flirt as the teen discovers his sexuality.
