Turgenev's play, which he began writing in 1849 when he was 31, is the story of his own disappointed romance with the wife of a friend. His devotion was only partially reciprocated and this cast a shadow over the young man. He called his play "The Student," but it did not receive a production; it was banned on the grounds of immorality. Turgenev then cut out the character of the husband and transformed the wife into a widow, but the play was still not performed, although it was published in this distorted form in 1855, ...
